Personal Experience: Using Full Fitness in Fitness Classes in NunavutFull Fitness does everything that I already do in my fitness classes, but it does it better. Normally, I have books, magazines, or photocopied materials that show various exercises and I have my students sift through them and select one exercise for each body part. This can be quite time consuming considering not all of the books have all of the exercises laid out nicely for each individual body part.
Once they have their exercises selected, they must then fill out a sheet of paper every time they come to class for a workout. They have to record their weight, the exercises that they did, how much weight, how many sets, and how many repetitions. At the end of class they must place their sheet of paper in their log binder. After four weeks of training, they must then take their data and analyze it. Have they improved? Have they achieved their goal? They won't know until they have taken the data from each individual day and analyzed it as a whole. Personally, I hate paper and I'm not likely to keep a workout log if I have to drag a book or sheet of paper/book around with me to every exercise. Not to mention that sometimes my water spills or sweat gets all over the book/paper smearing the ink or ruining the paper. So why should I expect my students to do this in class and think that they would continue doing this after the assignment is finished? So here comes Full Fitness with their solution to my problem. All of the exercises are contained within the app and are organized perfectly for what I expect my students to learn. There is a description of each exercise, a picture, and a video just in case students have difficulty knowing what to do. If they can't figure it out from those three avenues, I'm free to help out and give more specific instructions. The app takes care of answering most of the questions for the students so I can address the more serious issues without students having to wait as long. My students can then select a beginner workout which will start them out with some basic exercises and they can remove or add exercises depending on what the goal of their program is. It is completely customizable giving the students more flexibility to create their own workout programs. Once they have their program created, I can take a quick glance and ask them about their decisions to see if what they have selected reflects their intention. Once they start their workouts, they can use the app to record the number of sets, reps, and how much weight they are lifting each time so it is easy for them to remember next time. After doing an exercise at least two days, a graph can be seen to show improvement over time. No longer will students need to wait to analyze their data. They get feedback on their progress right away. When they have completed their workout, all they need to do is pass in their iPod touch, if it belongs to the school, or they can email their workout history to me, if it is their own personal device. They can also share their workout by using the workout sharing tool. By streamlining my fitness class with this app, it frees me up to deal with more serious issues and allows my class to continue at their own pace without having to wait for me all the time to answer their questions when descriptions and pictures aren't as clear to my students as they are to me. For any physical education teaching a fitness class with access to a fitness centre, I would highly recommend using this app for developing student workouts and submitting assignments. It will certainly help reduce the amount of paper you have to deal with and get you out from underneath that pile. |
